Japanese culture specialist and guest SMOC lecturer Maiko Behr provides an introduction to the
dazzling diversity of traditional kimono silks, offering an intimate look into minute details of the production process. Featuring examples from the antique kimono collection and original fashions of Vancouver collector/designer Fumie Von Dehn, this special show will trace Japanese silk through centuries-old techniques of craftsmanship to Western-inspired designs of the early 20th century. Live models will present contemporary designs that reveal a deep understanding of and respect for these materials while giving them new life.
This time only, the rare garments seen on stage will also be offered for sale. The show will be accompanied by a pop-up trunk sale of exclusive vintage fabrics and fashions, sourced from one-of-a-kind hand-dyed, hand-woven, and hand-painted Japanese kimono silks from the 1890s to 1960s. Please note that purchases will be by cash or cheque only.
Please note: Doors open at noon!
Gala: Bal Masqué
October 24
This is your chance to don your favourite faux persona!
Bal Masqué masquerade balls were a feature of the Carnival season in 15th century Europe, which grew into costumed public festivities in Italy during the 16th century Renaissance. They were generally elaborate dances held for members of the upper classes, and were particularly popular in Venice. Today, Bal Masqué is a party or feast where guests attend in costume, wearing a mask.
At SMOC’s Bal Masqué, we’ll provide you with an atmospheric pre-show string quartet, professional photo-ops with fabulously adorned partiers, sumptuous food, silent auction, and, of course, a stunning live fashion show hosted by our Honorary Curator, Ivan Sayers. Costumes and masks optional, but encouraged.
The Bal Masqué Gala Fundraiser presented by SMOC will be held at the Hellenic Centre (4500 Arbutus Street) on October 24, 2013. No-host bar 5:30 – 7:00 pm, Dinner @ 7:00 pm, Fashions @ 8:00 pm.
Tickets are priced at $100 for SMOC members, $125 for non-members. Tables of ten available for $1,000.
Don’t delay – sales are first come, first served.
